The COMPOCLEAN project: compost enriched with microorganisms for soil decontamination, is an experimental development project that the GESREMAN Company plans to carry out with the expert scientific support of several universities and other scientific and technical services.

The proposed project is a research and development and innovation project which falls within the bio-economy area of the Smart Specialisation Strategy RIS3-CLM RETO. The aim of the project is to take organic waste as a by-product, convert it into a specific type of compost which as a bioproduct can then be used to decontaminate soil. The compost will be enriched with microbial consortia selected to increase the effectiveness of the bioremediation treatments.

Hence, the research is geared towards acquiring the knowledge and skills necessary for the company to generate new products and services/processes within the emerging yet unstoppable bio-economy market.

The project should result in a new product/service which would enable the company to competitively position itself within the current market for soil decontamination treatments. The treatments are interesting because they are less costly and less harmful to the environment than those ordinarily used (physical, chemical or a combination of the two).

Furthermore, soil decontamination and the recovery and rehabilitation of the soil as suitable ground for plant growth is one way of positively affecting climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, a particular area of emphasis in the European Commission’s Thematic Strategy for Soil Protection.

The project entitled BIOTECHNOLOGY APPLICATIONS AND THE VALORIZATION OF NON-HAZARDOUS ORGANIC WASTE IN SOIL DECONTAMINATION involves a proposal for industrial research and development. The aim of the project is to carry out research geared towards the acquisition of knowledge and skills useful to the applicant company in generating new processes, products and services. For that, the research will be carried out using scientific and technological techniques based on biology and aimed at soil decontamination. These biotechnology techniques are known as bioremediation.

The project should result in a viable and effective soil decontamination product. The innovation will help the company to position itself competitively within the current market for soil decontamination and recovery treatments, thus increasing the limited supply of Spanish biotechnology products available in the field.

CAPISCAN 2.0: the introduction of ICT tools in urban furniture for pets within a circular economy scenario.

The project CAPISCAN 2.0: the introduction of ICT tools in urban furniture for pets, within a new scenario driven by the circular economy is an experimental development project which is being undertaken in a partnership between the CAPISCAN founder and GESREMAN Company.

The proposed project is experimental and falls within the metal-mechanics area of the Smart Specialisation Strategy RIS3-CLM challenges. The main objective of the strategy is to introduce ICTs to complete the automation of equipment which currently has a manually operated prototype.

CAPISCAN is a device (Figure 1) which allows pets, dogs in particular, to urinate and defecate comfortably according to their needs without them doing so on street pavements, in squares, in parks or on beaches. The prototype is made of resistant metallic materials, adequately treated to ensure they remain in good condition. The animal uses a tray covered in an absorbent material. When the user (dog owner) slides the bar, the tray is cleaned using brushes and the waste falls into side drawers.

With this in mind, the project aims to improve the process by introducing new ICTs to enable a better use of the device.

In addition, the second part of the project involves looking at opportunities for the valorization (compost or biogas production) of waste within a local authority context. The first part of the project will be carried out by CAPISCAN and the second part by GESREMAN.

The project should result in a new product (improved device and compost/biogas) which would enable the companies involved to position themselves competitively within the current market.

LIFE+ REGROW: Reclamation of olive oil waste abandoned lagoons using bio-recovery strategies in a circular economy scenario (LIFE16/ENV/ES/00331)

LIFE+REGROW Project aims to regenerate a rural brownfield (olive mill wastewaters-OMW abandoned ponds) by applying different in situ biorecovering strategies (bioremediation and phytoremediation) for site decontamination and reclamating the area to grow a green multifunctional infrastructure for educational, recreational and awareness purposes. In doing so, it will primarily contribute to mitigate soil sealing by restoring contaminated soils and to reduce contamination by recycling organic wastes for the remedial operations.

 

REGROW has a replicable purpose with a clearly focus on integrating circular economy to solve environmental problems. Moreover, the project aims to validate a cost-effective methodology and technically feasible solutions with positive effect on the affected area. REGROW targets attention on 5 ha of OMW abandoned ponds in Mora (Spain) that will be used as a demonstrative approach with the focus on its adaptation for similar locations in olive related regions. Consequently, the transfer and dissemination actions are also key aspects of this project.

 

The environmental problem targeted, which appears to be more common than previously expected, is caused by the inadequate management or uncontrolled disposal of OMW and is related to the construction of evaporation ponds, which rarely met engineering criteria for stability and safe accommodation of liquid wastes or the disposal on agriculture soil without properly criteria. The lack of isolation, breakage of ponds or improper soils applications are the subject of complaints because these residues from olive oil industry constitute a negative impact due to its potential pollution risk (high organic load, and polyphenol content with phytotoxic and antimicrobial properties). It is likely the major environmental issue to which the olive oil industry should face and the need of a properly disposal of these by-products is a serious concern for the olive oil producers and public authorities, as the main stakeholders.

Upon project completation, the REGROW-ECOPARK will be constructed as a green multifunctional space in an area of 39,000 m2 contaminated soil occupied by OMW ponds in which 2,400m2 area of soil (equivalent to 7200 soil tons) will be decontaminated by biorecovering strategies, 1,200 m2 will be re-vegetated by arbustive and Mediterranean species and the area will be provided with 3600 m2 of recreational-educational services with artificial wetland, birdwatching area and 600 m of educational tracks.

Therefore, LIFE+REGROW project could be displayed as a European good practice of the bio-based Circular Economy from Castilla-La Mancha, which will also provide a guide describing the best applicable biorecovering strategies for reclamation OMW ponds and a decision support system application to select the cost-effective and the best adapted techniques to solve similar environmental problems.
